**Side note: praying together is something that we are getting used to. Sometimes it's hard to start up or suggest, and it's often hard to admit what you need help with out loud in front of your partner. It helps though. It helps us let down our guards in front of each other. It helps us know what to pray for the other when we're apart. It helps us to get to know each other on another level overall - a very intimate level. Right now I'm reading the book Couples Who Pray: The Most Intimate Act Between a Man and a Woman
Anyhow, back to the story... we prayed before we left. We took the long route, down Hwy 30, because I love the small towns and stunning views from this scenic route that is often overlooked due to speed of arrival (it adds about 20 minutes to the drive). As we're passing through the quaint town of Rainier I get a text message canceling our day with Dad and Barb. Disappointed and slightly irked, since Rainier is halfway there, it was suggested that we continue to Astoria, go to the Astoria Column, as planned, and then head South to a more familiar beach for the rest of the day.
We had a great time. As our day unfolded in front of us, I realized that even the cancellation was an answer to something we'd prayed about. God was winking at us all day - answering prayers from the morning left and right. In the book about praying together, one of the authors (it's a husband and wife writing team) describes answered prayers as "godwinks". It's God's nonverbal cue that He's listening - he's winking at us, answering our prayer. Maybe he even has a mischievous grin on his face when he answers our prayers in ways like making plans falls apart. We can't do anything but through Him, and all that we have and have done is His - foiled plans and all.
